Best Season for Scuba Diving in Andaman & Nicobar India


The archipelagic Andaman Islands sit at the lap of Bay of Bengal, floating splendidly in isolation towards the east of India geographically. The beauty of these 300 islands lies in the white sand beaches enclosed within the palm lines, tropical rainforests, and the mangroves.

The mystical coral reefs indorsing marine life make the Andaman Islands as one of the best places for diving and snorkeling sites. The best season for Scuba diving in the Andaman Islands is between the winter and summer season. One can really enjoy the pleasant weather and can do all the adventure activities in the months between October and May. This indeed is the best time to do scuba diving. The islands support a tropical climate maintaining the average temperature between 23- 30°C, with the humidity index of 80% all-round the year. The monsoons between the months May to September brings in a medium to heavy rains twice a year.

The best season for scuba diving is definitely not the Monsoon season. However, rain does not affect scuba diving much. It affects the visibility at the shallow waters, but this usually happens at the time of the extended rainfalls.

Moreover, the tides play a vital role in underwater visibility which varies from week to week. Also, winds are something which matters the most. Extreme windy conditions make the sea rough and it is not advisable to go to the open sea. Thus, this adventurous sport should be considered to be done in the best season for scuba diving.

1. January – May

The best season for scuba diving is the duration between January and May. This is the season when the seas are in their most stable and the calm state. The time between March to May makes the seas to its best and the most stable conditions that sometimes give an impression of a mirror supporting the best conditions for scuba diving thereby making it the best season for scuba diving.

2. June – August

June, July, and August bring in the rainy season to the Andaman’s. The monsoon at the seas is very different from the monsoons at the mainland. This season supports the humid weather conditions making it the wettest period that allows it to remain cloudy all day with the frequent showers. This period supports the extreme weather conditions where there are wet periods with subsequent sunny days making them the dry period when the sunny breeze makes the sea calm for several days.
You can visit for the sight-seeing but the access to the nearby sheltered areas gets restricted. 

However, the fishes spawning in the warmer water makes it the perfect aura for the scuba diving, but the access is limited to the nearby sites only. The islands tend to be a paradise ideally but this period is not considered as the best season for scuba diving.

3. September – November

This period is referred as “The New Season”. This is the period when southern- west winds tend to die leading to regular showers and occasional winds. This is the time when scuba diving becomes the most mesmerizing experience of your life making you view a lot of fish spawning and the abundant biomass on the reefs. This period supports the best of the absolute views making it the second-best season for scuba diving. However, there is slightly a higher risk of winds spoiling your adventure limiting your access to the nearer sites only.

4. December

December seems to be a transition time which supports a lovely and a pleasant terrestrial weather bringing in occasional showers.
